Seamless Indoor & Outdoor Coverage Design With Atoll’s In-Building Module

As operators across Australia and New Zealand accelerated their 4G and 5G deployments, one issue became increasingly visible:

customers were still experiencing poor indoor performance even when outdoor coverage was strong.

Skyscrapers, complex floor layouts, shopping centres, and modern construction materials all contributed to inconsistent indoor coverage.

The Challenge

Growing customer complaints about weak indoor 4G/5G signals despite good outdoor macro coverage

Lack of a unified planning environment to design both outdoor macro/small cells and in-building systems

High cost and inefficiency from using multiple separate tools for DAS, small cells, and outdoor planning

Difficulty predicting performance across transitions between outdoor and indoor layers

The Solution

Operators turned to Forsk’s Atoll platform, supplied and supported regionally by TeleResources. By combining the Atoll Outdoor modules (macro & small-cell planning) with the Atoll In-Building module, operators could:

Use one planning environment for outdoor and indoor network design

Import floor plans, material libraries, and 3D building models to simulate indoor propagation accurately

Design DAS, small cells, and in-building solutions in the same workspace as the macro network

Seamlessly evaluate handover, transition zones, and combined coverage layers

Reduce engineering effort by eliminating the need to export, merge, or reconcile data across separate tools

The Impact

The integrated approach delivered immediate value:

Unified outdoor + indoor planning improved design consistency and engineering efficiency

More accurate indoor predictions, closely matching post-deployment measurements

Reduced redesign cycles and site revisits

Faster rollout of enterprise 5G solutions (offices, hospitals, retail centres, hotels)

Significant improvements in customer experience and retention

A senior RF engineer commented:

Using Atoll for both macro and in-building planning streamlined our entire workflow. We could design everything—from street-level 5G to multi-floor indoor coverage—in one tool.
